Want to get a glimpse of what life is like at your study away site? THIS IS NYU features student experiences from all over the globe. All of the stories are documented by students who maintain their own, personal blogs about their time at NYU, whether studying away or at their home campus. Get a sense of what your experience could be like from their travels, classes, and reflections on thisisnyu.tumblr.com.
Later in the semester we will provide further details for how to sign up and get involved!
Phase 2: Room Selection will begin on Thursday, March 30th. It is during this time that students will access the housing inventory and actually pick their Fall 2017 spaces. Unlike the Spring semester and many of the processes at the global sites, for Fall in New York students pick their own spaces rather than get assigned by a housing representative.
Students will be assigned a Selection Time, determined by randomized sorting within priority categories, that will give the specific date and time that they can access the housing inventory and complete the Phase 2: Room Selection process.
Students will also have the opportunity to access Room Preview from Friday, March 24th – Wednesday, March 29th (dates subject to change) that will allow you to “preview” the room selection process. During this time you will be able to see what the housing inventory and selection process will look like prior to you actually having to select your spaces. We highly encourage students to take advantage of Room Preview.
In order to guarantee housing in New York, students MUST select a space during Phase 2 once their selection time becomes available. Therefore it is very important that you carefully read the Phase 2 Room Selection Process info and Phase 2 FAQs on the blog prior to March 30th.
As always, if you have questions please contact Hasanthi Piyasena (email@example.com).
Everyone will receive an email from the Office of Residential Life and Housing Services with their specific selection time for the Phase 2: Selection housing process. Please note that Phase 2 starts on March 30th but not all students will start that early. You can check here to get a better understanding of how the selection times are spread out throughout the process. (psst. priority group 1 doesn’t actually start until April 3rd, so don’t panic)
Also, if you miss the email for any reason and still don’t know where to find your selection time, log into the housing portal, click on the Access Application button for the Academic Year 2017-2018 application. Once in the application, you will see the Application and Payment Status in the top right corner. That is where you should click to see your selection time.
Please remember that selection times are in Eastern Standard Time (New York) so keep that in mind when looking at your times. Also remember to try and select with your other group members in the room in case your top choices are not available and again have lots of back up choices in mind.
As always contact Hasanthi (firstname.lastname@example.org) of you have questions related to the housing process.
Room Preview will be available March 24-March 29 through the housing portal. Log in and access the Academic Year 2017-2018 application, as you did for Phase 1. You will now see an additional step for Preview of Room Selection. You should navigate to this step and go through the motions of what selection will look like once Phase 2 starts after March 30th.
We also encourage everyone to please watch the below video that goes through, step-by-step, what the selection process will look like so you are familiar with the process. Please note this video is from last year, but still shows the relevant steps. You will be able to select specific buildings, see the floors that have openings, select the rooms, and then the actual beds. When looking at the floors within a building, you will notice that each room will have either a D, F, M, or N designation after the room number. This refers to the gender assignment for the room. Rooms labeled D are Dynamic and are open for anyone to select. Rooms with either F, M, or N have at least one individual with that gender assignment already selected into that space. Please note that you can only select into a space that is either D or one that has the same gender assignment as yourself.
If you need to check your selection time, please read this post for how to find that information.
Please also remember that you will be choosing your specific room for the entire Academic Year. Students that are NOT staying in New York for Spring 2018 will receive instructions in early November for how to cancel their NY housing for the spring. Students continuing for Spring 2018 will stay in their selected spaces. There will be a process for new, incoming spring students to preference an opening in a room, but placements are not guaranteed and further information on this process will be available in November.
The Fall 2017 Study Away course listings will be available starting tomorrow, March 24 in the Albert Course Search. Just pick your site from the drop down to the right under Study Away Programs to see course offerings listed by department. More information on registering for your study away courses is available here. Please note that some courses may have changed since you last reviewed the posted offerings, and some courses may not be listed yet or may not have a set time / date. These should be available shortly. In the meantime, if you have any questions about how to search for courses please see the Registering for Courses Page or send an email to email@example.com.
We will send more information about how to actually register the week of April 24 in the coming weeks, but in the meantime take this time to:
- Check your registration appointment day and time by signing into the Albert Student Center and reviewing your appointment information displayed in the Enrollment Dates section.
- Check for registration holds by signing in to Albert Student Center. Some holds may block you from registration. Click “Details” in the “Holds” section to see contact and resolution information.
- Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your class schedule and degree requirements. NYU Students: Your advisor must clear you in Albert for registration.
- Use the “Shopping Cart” & “Validate” tools to start planning your schedule. If you cannot validate a course with a prerequisite you won’t be able to register without a permission number. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org to request permission numbers as necessary. Don’t wait for registration week!!
The Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD) determines qualified disability status and assists students in obtaining appropriate accommodations and services, both at their home campuses and while studying away.
Students currently registered who will be studying away must contact the Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities in order to discuss resources that might be required, to provide the necessary documentation, and to arrange for these services well before departure.
Additionally, students should speak to the Moses Center if they feel reasonable accommodations may need to be requested while away. Accommodations include but are not limited to: testing accommodations, note takers, use of computer for exams, materials in an alternate format, and provision of sign language interpreters to name a few.
Please visit the Study Away and Disability page on the Moses Center’s website to learn more. Information is provided for all NYU students (NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, and NYU New York home campuses), as well as for Visiting (non-NYU) students. Requests for accommodation at the NYU Global Sites must be made no later than four to six weeks before departure.
Students are able to reach out to the Moses Center with questions by calling +1 (212) 998-4980 or emailing email@example.com.
Please keep in mind you MUST arrive in New York no later than August 30, 2017. Housing is available starting August 27 and all students must check out of housing by December 22 at 10 AM, so if you plan to arrive early or leave late, please be aware you will be responsible for your own accommodations. Also note that arriving early or leaving late may have immigration implications, depending on your citizenship. It is your responsibility to investigate this before you book your flights. You can access the program calendar here.
Orientation will be scheduled for Thursday, August 31 and Friday, September 1. Do not schedule other events on those day as all orientation sessions are required. Please plan accordingly. The orientation schedule will be available closer to the start of orientation.
Students will be responsible for their transportation from the airport to your NY housing location. Detailed instructions will be available closer to the start of the fall semester. Instructions will also include check-in instructions and important phone numbers to have before the semester starts.
When shopping for flights, you are welcome to use any provider of your choice, but we encourage you to use NYU’s preferred partner, Egencia, to buy your ticket. Please see the following egencia instructions for info on how to book your flight through Egencia.
Please note: All students will be required to submit their flight details closer to departure. Instructions for doing so will come later on in the semester
There will be some opportunties this semester where you will get a chance to meet your fellow fall 2017 study away in New York students, but feel free to also coordinate something on your own. The NYU New York Fall 2017 Facebook Group is a great way to get the ball rolling – join, introduce yourself, and don’t be shy!
This is a private group just for students attending the program this fall. We will occasionally post information in the Facebook group about fun articles or events, but this group is primarily a social venue for you all!
